The Leesburg Church of the Nazarene started in cottage prayer meetings in 1956. Early services were conducted in homes by Rev. Paul Irwin
Eventually services were moved to the Melon Patch Theater for rent of $10.00 per Sunday.
The church started to build a parsonage at 210 S. Moss Street with plans to use the parsonage temporarily as a church. However, building and zoning laws would not permit them to use the building for a church so the early leaders finished the building for use as a parsonage. The congregation at that time held services at a church on Fourteenth Street which is now the Christian Missionary Alliance Church.
The church was officially organized on February 10, 1957 with 11 charter members.
In 1962 Rev. Steele was called to be the pastor. Under his leadership the church purchased 6 lots on Pamela and Susan Streets. Also under Rev. Steele’s leadership a sanctuary and educational building was constructed in 1964. Rev. Steele predicted that within 10 years a new sanctuary would be standing along side the one they had just completed. He was right.
Rev. James Tripp was called to pastor in 1972 and under his leadership a new sanctuary that Rev. Steele predicted was built. Work was started on the church in May 1973 and was in use by January 1974.
With the generous donation of building skills by members and friends of the congregation the 5900 square foot building was constructed at a cost of $59,928.00 . . . or $10.15 a square foot.
At the time of the dedication of the Pamela Street sanctuary the total value of all church buildings were $196,000. The indebtedness was $71,500. The membership from 1972-1974 had increased from 59 to 108.
Under the ministry of Rev. Don Overby the educational building was demolished and replaced with a new education and fellowship hall.
Rev. Custer and the building committee began a search for new property. Ten acres were purchased at 2100 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard for future growth and development.
Rev. John Weller was the pastor when, on the first Sunday of 2000, the church relocated to the 10 acres.
The church maintains a vision of ministry for the future. The present church board has developed a plan to reduce the present indebtedness. A vision for future growth and ministry may include a new fellowship hall, gymnasium, or who knows?
The church has come a long way . . . from worshipping in a pastors' home, to a theater, a borrowed church, and to sanctuaries that we have called home.
The church has come a long way . . . from starting with a congregation of 11 charter members to a church family of hundreds.
The church has come a long way . . . from a faithful mother with a baby on her hip leading the singing to a song director, a choir director, several instrumentalists and a full choir.
God has blessed and will no doubt continue to bless the church as we remain faithful.
